The Digital Census 2027 is a giant leap towards a "Viksit Bharat."
Introduction: Moving away from the traditional pen-and-paper method, the Government of India has officially launched the first phase of the Digital Census 2027 today, April 1, 2026. This ambitious project aims to create a real-time, accurate database of India’s population using advanced mobile applications and a dedicated self-enumeration portal.
What is Self-Enumeration?
For the first time, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has opened a window for citizens to fill in their own details.
- The Window: From April 1 to April 15, 2026, citizens in Phase-1 states can log in to the official portal.
- The Process: Residents can use their mobile numbers to register and answer the mandatory census questions regarding their household, assets, and demographics.
Phase-1 Coverage
The first phase, starting today, covers select States and Union Territories including:
- Delhi (NDMC areas)
- Karnataka
- Goa
- Sikkim
- Andaman & Nicobar Islands Other states, including Maharashtra, are expected to join the digital drive in the upcoming phases later this year.
Why Digital Census Matters?
The transition to a digital format is expected to:
- Speed Up Results: Data will be processed instantly, reducing the years-long wait for census reports.
- Accuracy: In-built validation in the app will prevent human errors during data entry.
- Data Privacy: The government has assured that all data collected is encrypted and will be used solely for policy planning and welfare schemes.
Conclusion: The Digital Census 2027 is a giant leap towards a "Viksit Bharat." By empowering citizens to participate directly, the government aims to build a more transparent and data-driven future. Akhand News encourages all eligible citizens to participate in this national exercise.
